From Idea to First Draft: A 30-Day Plan

Thirty days is enough time to finish a short, rough first draft if the plan accounts for how drafts actually get written — unevenly, with bad days, and without waiting for clarity that won't arrive until you're already halfway through.

Days 1–3: lighthouses, not an outline

Resist the urge to plan the whole book. Spend three days deciding only your inciting incident, your midpoint reversal, and your ending — three sentences, not three documents. Write one paragraph about your protagonist's want and need. Stop there. Anything more detailed will start to feel like a finished plan you're afraid to deviate from.

Days 4–10: build momentum before quality

The first week of actual drafting should optimize for one thing only — showing up daily, even for a short, bad session. A small, consistent word count for seven straight days builds a habit that a single heroic 5,000-word weekend never will. Don't reread what you wrote yesterday. Just continue.

Days 11–18: the murky middle

This is where most abandoned drafts die — the plot's initial momentum has worn off, and the ending is still too far away to pull you forward. The fix isn't motivation; it's a a smaller target. Instead of "write the middle of my novel," aim for "get my protagonist from the lighthouse behind them to the lighthouse ahead of them," one scene at a time, regardless of whether the scene feels important.

Days 19–24: write toward the reversal

By now you should be approaching your planned midpoint reversal. Let it cost something you set up earlier — a debt coming due, in the language of three-act structure. Don't worry if the reversal you reach doesn't match the one you imagined on day one; the version your draft has earned by day twenty is usually better than the one you guessed at before you'd written a word.

Days 25–30: race to a real, ugly ending

Resist polishing. A first draft's only job is to exist completely, beginning to end, even if entire scenes are placeholder summaries in brackets. An unfinished, beautifully written half-novel is far harder to fix than a finished, ugly whole one — you can edit a complete draft. You can't edit a draft that stopped on day fourteen.

If you fall behind, don't restart the plan — compress it. The goal isn't exactly thirty days; it's finishing something complete enough to revise.
